Most who know me well would say that my mind “works in mysterious ways”. I’m wracked with bouts of hyperfocus, hyperactivity, extreme distraction, and total dissociation. This can be tough to manage, but ultimately, my personal quirks greatly define the sort of person I am. They define how I interact with others and how I work, for better or for worse. When tasked to write a short piece for flute and vibraphone, the idea of translating my lived experience enamored me so that I expanded the piece into a set of miniatures.

Four Glimpses Into A Mind is the final product, consisting of four episodes autobiographically illustrating certain states of mind. Flow captures the fickle stream of creative consciousness, starting with short bursts of progress but eventually settling into a continuous “flow state”. z o n e is inspired by my tendency to drum, hum, and beatbox when I zone out of a task. rAmBle represents rapid, meandering conversation; the kind of conversation I might have about a particularly interesting topic. Finally, Shock. A sensation of sudden dissociation away from a stressor that is slowly brought back into focus inspired this movement.
